The 5th Shenzhen-HK City/Architecture Biannual Expo
Tianhua’s works
The theme of Tianhua’s show on the 2003 Shenzhen-HK City/Architecture Biannual Expo is “Marginal Residences”. The theme is embodied by three booths reflecting three groups respectively: construction workers, blinds and waste collectors in the city. In comparison with mainstream society, the three groups are on the edge socially, psychologically and physiologically, easy to be ignored by people chronically. As the groups experiencing and taking part in the urbanization course of China, the architects hope by this opportunity to express the attention to the living status of these groups and accordingly brought out different constructive proposals at the layer of design. By three most primitive houses, through use and spatial layout of different materials, the architects deliver the concept “Marginal Residences” from different angles.
100 million- m2 Marginal Residences- about proposal “Standards for Site Temporary Accommodations for Construction Workers”
At this Shenzhen-HK City/Architecture Biannual Expo, Tianhua presents a booth erected by 1490 eliminated old safety helmets by construction workers. Architects hope to express the attention to the number and living and working state of construction workers and contemplation about the improvement plan by this booth. Behind the 1490 helmets there are sweats, hardship and longing for the future. Under the historical background in the course of human civilization and urbanization, as the constructers of the city, construction workers hide behind the modern civilization and prosperity, facing challenges of extremely high and low temperature, polluted airs, noises and various poor living conditions. They never draw attention of public even if they work hard for the city.
Taking China as an example, according the figures released by the State Statistics Bureau, by 2011 there were 48.32 million of construction workers in China. If average living area per capita of this group is the area of a bed, or 2 m2, all of construction workers in China need up to 100 million m2. In response to “Urban Fringe” of this Biannual Expo, we believe the issue mirrored by such a huge scale shall make us reflection. According to aerial views, we find there is a kind of dwellings always at the edge of the parcel of different cities and areas, the height of these dwelling just like the status of their residents at the bottom of the society. They are work sheds erected for these construction workers
The priority of our study is the representation of so many marginal residences and exploration for the possibility of improvement. Therefore the architectures brought out a proposal “Standards for Architectural Design of Site Temporary Dorms for Construction Workers”. When we research all architectural laws and regulations issued by the governmental authorities in China, we find there are approx 404 standards for various buildings, structures and constructions designed for mainstream groups, but without any for improvement of site temporary residences for construction workers. Through site investigations and interviews, the architects obtain the first-hand data. Out of the social responsibility sense of these architects, we hope this virtual proposal can draw more attentions of society at all levels.

Study on the cleaning city – waste collectors in city
Study on the addiction to cleaning
Tianhua has another booth erected by recycled paperboards at the Biannual Expo. The booth describes the waste collectors in the city who are despised by the mainstream groups in the city. Through investigation, the architects found in this china of recycle and production of wastes, the waste collectors are divided into primary collectors, mobile collectors and stationed collectors. Each of the three groups is wandering or living on the edge of the city. Maybe they are marginalized geographically at different levels, but they are marginalized socially and psychologically at the same level.
The research objects are a group living in several waste sorting yard outside the 5th Ring Road in Beijing. With limited space, they arrange their own living and working modes. The researchers also found the waste recycling and burning yards of a city is always the part of the waste recycle of this city. The scale of these waste collector and classifiers is bigger than our imagination. They contribute to the city by their works. We cannot imagine what kind the normal waste recycle of this city would become without their existence. At the Biannual Expo, on the one hand, together with plan designers, the architects artistically represent their status of survival and work of these waste collectors; on another hand, these exhibited models made of recycled paperboards show the occupational characteristics of these group to arouse the sympathy of audiences.
Study on the blind residence mode and the image of a dark city
Another part of Tianhua’s booth is a “dark house” aiming at the “blinds” who are marginalized physiologically and socially. By two exhibits in the booth, designers are to discuss the marginalization of blind relative to the healthy people. The possibility between both is discussed to some extent.
There is an exhibit as a deduction of “Brain Map”. The architects represent the urban space they are living with physical models. The exhibited models tell audience how blinds locate the urban spaces and how to form holographic image. By all perceptive functions other than seeing, they can feel the height of a building by wind spend and guess the width of a street with noise. All these perceptions are far beyond the scope the eye can reach.
Another exhibit is a dark room. There is a dark passage which only allows one person to pass in one time. The experiencing audience also can hear a story about a seeing-eye dog. The designer was inspirited by a “Blind Cinema”, a charity institution in Beijing. At this special cinema, the volunteer allows the blinds to imagine the scenes and pictures of the movie by telling audiences the details. At the end of the passage there is a silent video. The audience who just experienced the dark world will see the pictures in this silent movie back so as to restructure the subtle boundary and connection between seeing and hearing.
What caused the birth of this exhibit were interviews between architect and blinds to tell us another unimaginable world these blinds are living. Their life is not so dark like our “mainstream group” thinks, they talk online and read newspapers, play footballs… they have wonderful and normal life just like we have.

“Clouds, Water and Rocks”: an urban public cultural cluster
Cultural & Sports Center, Suzhou High-tech Park
In 2013, “Cultural & Sports Center, Suzhou High-tech Park”, Tianhua started a brand new attempt in cultural and sports buildings. This project is different from the cultural works like Library of Quzhou University or Waigaoqiao Cultural Center. This time Tianhua hope to positively explore the relation between building and city and the problems of building itself. Huang Xiangming, Tianhua’s Chief Architect responsible for this project worked with Shui Yanfei, a young architect in this international design competition organized by Suzhou High-tech Park Government and Planning Bureau. Their design plan finally won so many international famous architect firms as selected implementing plan.

Project: Cultural & Sports Center, Suzhou High-tech Park
City: Suzhou, Jiangsu
Client: Suzhou High-tech Park Cultural & Sports Development Co., Ltd.
Type: Culture and Education
Building area: 173000 m2

Cultural & Sports Center, Suzhou High-tech Park, is located in Suzhou High-tech Park with total construction area up to 173000 m2. The center is a comprehensive cultural & sports complex initiated by Suzhou High-tech Park Government and Planning Bureau through full consideration of resource integration, covering cultural center, library, stadium, public gym center, outdoor leisure plaza, etc. with the principle of “creating support, convenience and benefit for public”,the project is to build up a symbolic cultural and sports facility with local features by combining cultural and art communication, sports events, gym and entertainment, academic study, reading, information service and some other functions.

Sincere design to reflect the real city life
In “Townscape”, Gorde Cullen introduced a word “Desert Planning” which appropriately describes the result of functionalist planning: the design on paper based on function and form makes design far away from the real life as a tool to maintain image of the city. In today’s city we can see more huge public buildings like worshiping buildings to separate our organic living space; while the sense of distance for creating a milestone is indifferent and boring.
In the design of Cultural & Sports Center, Suzhou High-tech Park, the architects hope these huge complex can be directly associated with the scale of the city. The architects also expect to make new strategies together with the government and citizens to create more possibilities for the city and the users and inspirit public to better respond to the real life in the city by designs.

Therefore, in the overall planning of Tianhua, Cultural & Sports Center, Suzhou High-tech Park is designed as a part of the city instead of one or more independent buildings. Here the correspondence between the function and form in modernism disappeared. The functions and mass are attached to a kind of basic form like a traditional Arabian city or China’s traditional city with growing organic environment and inherent logics. Therefore in the plan on the Cultural & Sports Center, Suzhou High-tech Park, a nearly 200,000-m2 huge building can be represented by connection of some small functional modules instead of an oviform top covering the National Grand Theatre to create the integrity and milestone. In this way the mass of the building is ignorable as a part of the townscape. People will not look this building in the distance. They can walk in, climb on or stay at its different parts; they may have a rest, stroll about or exercise at this unique and organic place in the public space of the city.
Tianhua treats today’s life of the city sincerely and this attitude is reflected on the strategy of this project to exert the functions of the city. In the project design, the priority turns to “daily life” from “event”. The plaza on the 6-m high platform is not only an existence for function of magnificent scale and traffic center, but also a public place in daily life.
While a commercial street through the whole parcel connecting other parts of the city is arranged below the six-m high platform, providing another possibility for people walking through this parcel. The daily life shown in this passage seems to be a conflict with the plaza on the platform, but almost all of main functional modules of this huge complex have entrances and exits in this street. You may experience your life in the library, cultural center, cinema, swimming pool, café, book store, restaurant or other stores via this street.

Reshape the mountain to construct a tribe of city culture
The parcel for the Cultural & Sports Center is not big. It is bordered by the main roads, rover course and mountains. The base was a stone pit and the left huge pit formed the lake surface. The remaining stone wall surrounds the lake at another side, looking to the cultural & sports center, like a vivid landscape in the distance.
Facing such natural environment and conditions, the architects gave up the thought about designing a building because any building, no matter what perfect the design is, is inevitable opposite to the environment. Therefore the conceptual design was originated from local landform, a good choice. The extension of the existing mountain and cliff makes the building complex an integral part of the nature.
The design concept of following the shape of the mountain is adopted in the planning. Considering the different traffics for venues at different scales, road system of the project is planned as a whole. T shaped citizen park connects public spaces in all directions; the one-way road and traffics control are adopted to control traffics in peak hours. In vertical design, the multi-dimensional and multi-level space is used a link to all venues.
The transparent view design enable people on the road, bridge and river course to see the mountain and cliff behind the open plaza and platform.
The building is accessible in an open attitude itself. The landscape-oriented, multi- level and multi-elevation design satisfies diverse demand of citizens no outdoor activities and also maximizes the public benefit of the building itself. This 6-m high platform as a big hall of the city starts a journey in the cultural & sports center. The people will feel the different atmospheres from the stadium and gym center at the west side and the cultural and entertainment center including cultural center, library and cinema at the east side. On different parts of the platform, you may overlook the lakes and cliff at north side and the river and city in the south. The commercial street below the platform connects both sides of the base, linking the cultural and sports functions vertically at the time of horizontal extension. In this way all activities of this complex are associated with each other. The combination of multiple courtyards and sloping design among floors create more roof space and climbing experience. As to the shape and the interface with the city, the project is backing off. It finally becomes a part of the mountain and then advances and unfolds layer by layer. The project presents a “peak of humanism” in response to the mountain in the nature by this cultural and sports cluster in the city.
Clouds, Water and Rocks, connecting history and future
Suzhou’s people are fond of appreciation of lakeside rocks in history. There is a poem: “The waves are green on the foot of Dongting Mountain and there are silent rocks sleeping for millions of years”. Local people like the thin and porous feeling of the lakeside rocks shaped by drips in tens of millions of years with a harmony between inside and outside.
Similar, such harmony relation is also reflected on the streets and gardens in Suzhou. What is important for a courtyard and building here is the consistency between virtual image and real life and the harmony beside inside and outside.
When these are put on the digital background, the architects hope to deliver a complicated spatial state similar to the rocks along Tai Lake by piling some simple abstract Plaza blocks in a way of Rubik's Cube or pixel, just like the description of Deleuze, a Postmodern philosopher, spatial form with internal and external alternation, full of folds and the generally random complicated combination generated by computer create a brief fresh architectural form. While such empty framework with changing meanings and dialectics turns to a gene to some extent independent, reproducible, variable, adapting to environment and allowing buildings to develop spontaneously without destroying their integrity. Maybe that is a strategy adopted by architects to not only enhance the changeability and flexibility of design, but also prevent overall design concept from collapsing for inevitable modification in the complicated unstable environment for the project in current China
Generally a culturally oriented building has obvious public attribute, with stronger appeal in the certain urban area. In other words, it may become a determinative factor of a dynamic community. They shouldn’t be the empty concept or meaningless form. They should be the contributors to the city in a real effective way.
Just like Chief Architect Huang Xiangming said, “We do neither hope make a huge building and then fill with functions, nor build up a monument above the masses. We hope to give people more opportunities in a real life and allow them closer to each other.” The architects put priority of the study on the outer space of the culturally based public facility on the interaction between human and space. They stress the connection among human’s experience, building and real life in a city by starting from the relation between physical and mental world of human and the outside environment so as to make the building a real public facility. That is the biggest starting point of this design.

Birth of concept “Clouds, Water and Rocks”
Digital Tai Lake Rocks
Taihu Rocks are generated by washing and dissolution in a long history. The soakage and touch of lake water form a universal spatial relation disagreed by the West and East in spatial recognition. The architects of the Cultural & Sports Center also attempt to use such universal dialectic spatial mode in the design. Therefore we brought out the concept of “Clouds, Water and Rocks” to digitalize the Taihu Rocks. We’re intentioned to present the integration among nature, human and technology and inherit the philosophy “harmony between human and nature” in classic garden design to create the porosity of the urban public space, a place for cultural communication among citizens with the maximized public benefit. At this place, the people flows in the building like water flows through porous rocks to realize a harmony of culture finally.
People of community cross the river
Leisure plaza in the city
People on the plaza in the city
People at trolley car station

Delicate spatial sequence of the park-arouse diversity
Activity: by connecting public spaces in all respects in the base, create a T-shaped citizen park to satisfy diverse demands on outdoor activities while maximizing the function of the building in public service.
Porous urban space:
To realize the design objective brought by owners – the perfect integration of “Technology, Landscape and Humanism”, the designer will deliver the “Technology” with new structural system, new materials and construction technique and high –tech approaches, the “landscape” by introduction of eco-design and sustainable energy-saving technology and the “humanism” in the respects like location, identifiability, citizen culture and collective cultural identity.

A story about a link of the city
Create a wonder city life
With adept design
Zhaomushan, Chongqing, Hongkong Land
Commercial Complex
Project: Zhaomushan Beijun Commercial Project, Chongqing (Hongkong Land)
City: Chongqing
Client: Hongkong Land
Type: the urban complex
Building area: 403000 m2
With expanding modern city, the city’s functions are also further dispersed, eventually making people completing more society in a short distance, while people care about the value loss caused by flying time facing the tight schedule. Therefore the urban complex which can accommodate a variety of property forms so as to form a resultant force was born. However, guided by the concept “functionalism”, the development of the urban complex often stops at the complicated features and precise layout to pursue for the maximized commercial value, ignoring the exploration of the in-depth value of the public attribute of the complex itself and the characteristics of the city.

In the design of Zhaomushan Commerce Project in Chongqing, through skillful and innovative approach, Tianhua’s architect team expressed the concept and principle of the complex design of Tianhua: to upgrade the public environment and enrich life in the city while creating the maximized value for developers. Zhaomushan Project is located in Zhaomushan sector, the core area of the new urban area in northern Chongqing with total occupied area of 51,609 m2 including total construction area of 403,379 m2. The property is composed of a nearly 140000- m2 Shopping Mall and an approx 130000- m2 offices building. It is a large commercial complex project led by reputed international developer –Hongkong Land with total investment of over RMB 3 billion in combination of shopping mall and Grade –A office building. Hongkong Land is always one of the biggest property investment, management and development groups in Asia. It has successfully developed and is running an over 460000 -m2 high-grade commerce & office property in the business center in the Central, Hong Kong, Marina Bay Financial Centre, One Raffles Quay and a number of large complex property projects in the world. The fact that Hongkong Land directly entrusted Tianhua’s public facility construction team with Zhaomushan Project shows the full trust of the client on the strength and professionalism of the design teams.
So far over ten big real estate projects surround Zhaomushan, including Hongkong Land, Jinke, Vanke, Red Star Macalline with primary layout of a high-end community. With the successive entrance of the high-grade owners and the further completion of supporting facilities like buses, subways and education institutions, the top life circle in northern Chongqing has been formed gradually. Hongkong Land’s Zhaomushan Project grasps this great opportunity. Through combination of development of large commerce and office properties, the project is to create a center in this top life circle by taking advantage of public traffic hub while providing commercial support facilities for the whole area.
The base of the project is near the urban main roads and transport hub in the area and also directly connecting to the subway line under construction and underground P+R parks built by the developer for the government. Due to the mountainous landform, there is an about 40-m height difference from south to north, bring an extremely big challenge in development and design.
Starting from the early-stage project planning, Tianhua’s team has been taken the creation and improvement of the public space of the city as one of important considerations. The project will service the owners and the tenants of the properties in the area, and the team also hopes that the project can provide the people in the surroundings and even in the whole new urban area in the north with outstanding service and experience. The designers try to turn the disadvantage into the advantage by comprehensive analysis on the surroundings of the parcel. On the premise of perfect harmony of height difference between the office tower and the commercial skirt buildings, the efficient organization of traffics of human, vehicles and cargos and reasonable utilization of existing height difference of the base, the team established the overall design thought “link of the city”-taking Shopping Mall as the soul and the link of the whole development, connect to the tower upwards, and the surrounding urban space and landscapes horizontally and the subway downwards seamlessly. Based on above arrangement, reconstruct the gully at the west side into the waterscape. By multi-dimensional interaction among underground plaza, ground water platform and air landscape and the gardens, the project presents an unusual spatial experience. Among the four office towers above the commercial skirt building, except the 150-m extra-high tower at the southwest corner of the parcel will become the new landmark of the city, three towers constitute a triangular layout at the north side, directly attracting the consumers from and to subway. Different office products can satisfy diverse market demands, reflecting the diversity of the project.

At macro layer, built a hub of the area and activate the city
In the Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacobs said, “when we find a busy commerce in an area in the city, we always see there is other colorful life in this place at the same time such as various cultural opportunities and wonderful views in the street.” with huge mass and complicated functions, the urban complexes are standing in the center of the city. More importantly we must stress its important role in the spatial structure of the city –a hub powering the city. For remarkable position of “hub of the area”, Chongqing Zhaomushan Project further shows its public attribute. We know that, for an outstanding complex development, the complicated functions are not from the simple addition, these functions supplement and facilitate each other so that the group effect far larger than the individual effect. Here commerce is the bond and the power driving the sustainable development of a complex and also the key to this project in building the energy hub of the city by outstanding design.
Considering the public roads, and traffic resources, the property layout strategy of the project itself and the height difference of the base, the team creatively brought the unprecedented design concept of “six ground floors” to magnify the “link” effect of Zhaomushan Project to the largest extent.
On the B1 and B2, the exit of the subway is closely connected to the commercial zone. The commercial zone and P + R parks enable the seamless transfer in turn. On the ground floor, in the conditions that the shopping mall is on the semi-underground floor in the south, the residents of the residences in the north are introduced via the city plaza in the north. At this layer, the lobbies of the four office towers are connected to the commercial zone via the indoor corridor so as to effectively pull up the commercial atmosphere by people working in the office towers. On the second floor, the shopping mall forms the second ground main entrance in the south close to the main road of the city. Via the main shopping passageway from north, the people can flow into the residences and the community –based commercial zone opposite to the closed overbridge spanning the municipal road at north side so that they can go home indoors fast and conveniently. On the third floor, the commercial zone connects to the traffic hub via the overbridge at the east side so as to realize the seamless docking with various public traffic systems at multiple layers in multiple directions. The sixth ground floor is the roof of the shopping mall. All of the elevators of the four office towers are accessible to this floor which connects to the high-grade restaurants on the roof via the hanging gardens and commercial zone via a closed corridor to transport traffics to the commercial zone from the air.
The value created by the “six ground floors” is not just the consumers injected to the commercial zone from multiple directions. From another angle, the efficiency of the commercial zone will closely connect the various traffic systems to the complicated city life and shopping experience in the city. By convergence effect, infinite potential and energy are inspired.

At micro layer, create a link for solid space and deliver brand-new locale experience
If you believe Zhaomushan Project as a hub is multi- functional at macro layer, we hope we can create a brand-new differentiated experience of users at humanistic layer so as to lift the quality and competitiveness of the whole project.
Commercial zone is the soul of the whole project. Therefore, it is the priority of the creation of the experience. as a shopping mall providing one-stop shopping, entertainment and leisure service, this shopping mall consists of five ground floors and four underground floors with a huge mass, covering diverse commercial forms from boutique retails, restaurants, entertainment and 10-hall cinema to supermarket, catering plaza and children experience center. How to integrate the huge mass in diverse considerate experience is the key to an extraordinary design of commercial zone.
Breaking oppressed design mode of box-like introverted traditional shopping mall, through flowing fashion indoor space, multi-dimensional outdoor landscape and close interaction indoor and outdoor spaces, Tianhua’s architect team designed a ventilate energetic shopping and leisure experience. The indoor space of the shopping mall is based on reasonable organization of streamline commercial layout, efficient shop plan and traffics horizontally and vertically. The streamline layout and diverse commercial forms pull up the traffics on the higher floors and underground floors to the largest extent. The design not only stresses the dramatic effect of space of the island, but also enhances the experience of details sensitizing the consumers like elevator lobbies of the underground parks and bathrooms.
Outdoors, the shopping mall not only has fashionable magnificent facades, but also connects to the roof garden via the big platform close to the waterscape and large slope so as to form a multi-dimensional urban park open to public all day. All these greatly enhance the public attribute and value of the project while fully utilizing waterscape resources and outdoor space to increase the commercial value. Besides the large slop is also an abstract response to existing buildings in this Chongqing built on the mountains.
The green vegetations penetrate on every floor from subsiding plaza to ground waterside platform and roof garden so as to form a multi-dimensional outdoor environment with changing landscapes from underground space to ground and air spaces. The consumers in the shopping mall can not only overview the city waterscape garden, the reconstructed gully, but also go outdoors from any floor to become a part of nature and the garden on the platform. These seamless penetration and interaction indoor and outdoor provide consumers with option of unique experience so as to effectively form a highlight different from other similar projects and attract more consumers to stay here.
We believe, the attempt of creating a multi-dimensional spatial link connecting indoors, outdoors, underground, ground and air spaces together greatly enhances the quality and value of the commercial zone while providing citizens with a 24-hour public leisure space. The design will definitely bring a win-win situation.

Summary:
With the popularity of urban complex in the tier-1 and tier-2 cities, the new projects face increasing competition. So designer must get rid of the stale and bring forth the fresh. By presenting the pioneering work “Chongqing Zhaomushan Project”, Tianhua brought a brand-new concept “link of city”. The project is to further dig out the value of the complex in the city while providing the optimized architectural solution. It’s expected that the potential and value of the project will be further dug out by organic interaction between public attribute and commercial characteristics.

A story about quality
A way to a quiet life in the city

No.10, Shanghai Overseas Chinese Town
Overseas Chinese Town, Pujiang is at the downtown of Shanghai, at the north side of Huangpu River, approx 15 km to People’s Plaza via Lupu Bridge and about 7 km from 2010 World Expo Site. You may arrive at this low-density garden –like urban area from People’s Plaza, Huaihai Road, Xintiandi and some other places via World Expo Riverside Venue; the Railway 8 further shortens the distance between Pujiang Overseas Chinese Town and the downtown to create more convenient traffics for residents.
Project: No.10, Shanghai Overseas Chinese Town
City: Shanghai
Client: Overseas Chinese Town
Type: residence
Building area: 46000 m2
Villa as the second residence mot only carries the basic function of residence, but also delivers the longing for and appealing to the high –quality life. However, after high-speed development, China’s residential projects are still in extensive stage in absence of work with high integrity. The low –rise high-end residences in the city gradually become the highlights of the real estate market. With regard to how to grasp the core basic value of such buildings and how to successfully turn the value to designer’s language to provide more considerate and more comfortable lifestyle for customers, Tianhua has create more evolvements and exertions in this field in comparison with exploration and study on the intensive residences in the past.
“Overseas Chinese Town No.10” is located in the core of Shanghai’s Pujiang Overseas Chinese Town, close to Liming River in the south, with occupying area of 73067.30 m2, total construction area of 46161.32 m2 and plot rate of 00.41. The product is a low –rise dwelling with four layouts in terms of area: 650 m2, 550 m2, 470 m2 and 380 m2. The community is composed of four clusters with orderly closure, unique scattered buildings and generally leveled ground. The landscape element is added to the main roads in the east and west, and centralized greenbelt is introduced to the middle axis from south to north with the low-rise building inside so as to realize close integration of waterscape in the center and all buildings.
Chinese-style courtyards inside Italian –style design
The architectural planning and design of Pujiang Town follow the urban design concept of Gregotti Associati International. With strict design principle, the Italian-style project represents a design style with remarkable integrity. As a high-tend residential project in Pujiang Town, there is a big challenge before the architects of “Overseas Chinese Town No. 10”: the project should not only respect the existing layout of the city and extend the Italian-style block, but also provide residents with more Chinese-style space and cater for the complex of modern people for traditional culture. Finally, with a brand new Italian-style structure and Chinese –style courtyard design, Tianhua’s architects presented the Italian-style classic work with modern design ad organized residential space with Chinese –style courtyards. The work is fashionable, simple, elegant and full of humanism anywhere so as to perfectly eliminate conflict between both; on the premise of satisfying requirements of sunshine and spacing, the four major clusters of different layouts are placed on appropriate landscape –based axes and areas in terms of size. In this way all of them can enjoy unique advantage of courtyard and landscape. Therefore every path leads to a quiet wonderland in this noisy city.
As to the single courtyard, from dooryard, yard at house’s sides and the backyard, the transition of privacy reflects the cultured relationship of Chinese traditional courtyard with outside and the shift from inside to outside. This is a progressive method consciously guiding people in the courtyard.

Micro-space enhances relationship among buildings
To enhance the presence of the space of the courtyard, the architects also adopt a series of languages not for single building, such as segmental walls (corridor, L-shaped short wall, etc.) to make building standing out from the whole landscape. These segmental walls make the building a part of the landscape. Besides, these walls are also integral parts of the surroundings and the building.
The architectural plan is a standard arciform house plan. However, the architects make the arc a complete Plaza plan by some design factors like pillars and porches to stress the integrity of the building. When you walk inside, you’ll feel a changing space instead of a complete façade. The view and micro-space work together to complete the building.
An invisible axis constitutes a transition of spatial levels
The design of Chinese traditional courtyard puts priority on the integrity. Several similar single buildings form a complicated courtyard. The arrangement seems to be random and flexible, but there is always an invisible axis stressing the spatial sequence to deliver the holism in traditional Chinese culture. The indoor designers of the isolated houses of “Overseas Chinese Town No. 10” present the sense of space on the ground floor by the concept of axis in Chinese traditional spatial design. Taking the direct eyeshot as an invisible axis, from the entryway, you can see the courtyard and feel a progressive and direct spatial relationship; at the area requiring high privacy, the grey tune, spatial layers, corner French windows and some other skills are used to enable the interaction between indoor and outdoor. The sound, light and shadow and moving people constitute a warm family
The residential space is the best building protecting privacy of the individual and family. This point is more important for high-grade residential products. The architects satisfy different spatial demands through classification and reasonably organize spatial sequence. Some spaces like living room and dining room fully open up towards private courtyard; the elements like the wall and green fense between neighbors ensure the privacy of other parts of the courtyard. Due to the balance between view and privacy, the height of separating wall and fense is just the normal stature of a person; therefore the area of the interface of the second floor with outside is reduced intentionally’ the bedrooms on the third floor back towards the inside of the building, plus roof garden, the design further stresses the privacy.
Space of main courtyard
Break traditional stiff arrangement, release the view of the residents and connect the courtyard to the inside of the building by pulling the main courtyard close to the residents.
Grey spatial design
Design a grey grid space at the entrance of building and the corner of living room, remind of shift and enhancement of space and create transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Consideration of views
The architects fully consider the view design around Chinese complex;

As a high-end low-rise residential project, on the premise of urban design concept and strict form of Italy’s Gregotti Associati International, the project is to create a natural, graceful, people-oriented architectural environment with an orderly enclosure and scattered four major clusters inside in combination with design concept of traditional Chinese courtyard so as to closely integrate view in the building and make this modern project classic and full of humanism.

Reflect the structural logics by details
As a residential product full considering market demand, the appearance and style always get full representation and exertion, while the logics different from art creation is ignored. However, logics is the basis of every building. With regard to the building design of Overseas Chinese Town, the combination of logical structure and interesting design reflects the relative relaxation of architects; especially selection and control of materials are the well-leveraged and enable the buildings to go through the test of time. Due to restriction of the quota, every house is three floors. Therefore, architects selected light stones and glass with exquisite details. This design is graceful with contrast between virtual environment and real conditions, harmonious with other two –floor houses inside the courtyard; on the third floor, the most private master bedroom is reduced visually to eliminate its discordant and abrupt impression so that the relation of the master bedroom and the main building is similar to the relation between a two-floor villa and a small loft. Besides, the woods with natural textures are adopted to eliminate the conflict between height of the building and existing urban benchmark of the new Pujiang and weaken the sense of heaviness and depression of the whole building.
The attention of architects to the details is also reflected in the whole design process-all working procedures including treatment of junction of materials, heavy truss structure hided by slope, joint of stone materials, processing of metal plates and density of wooden texture have gone through strict test. The designed interface of different materials, clear logics of structure and strict control of construction quality ensure that the project is never the sum of all details. The whole building is consistent logically from inside to outside.
As the meeting point of Eastern culture and Western culture, Shanghai is cradle of all-embracing Shanghai-branch culture. On this land featuring so diverse culture, the clustering planning of “Overseas Chinese Town No. 10” is in response to the urban planning and the landscape in perfect combination with the concept of Chinese traditional courtyard design; the form of the building faithfully reflects the indoor spatial characteristics and presents changing façade with color treatment of building based on aesthetic rule of the architecture. The high quality it reflects comes from the in-depth completion of the project insisted by Tianhua all the time, so it will never be copied or transcended by followers.

A story about initiatives
Create an energetic community in a city

 Gouzhuang Cen Avenue, Hangzhou
Project: Gouzhuang Cen Avenue, Hangzhou (Vanke)
City: Hangzhou, Zhejiang
Client: Vanke
Type: Commerce
Building area: 8000 m2

Undoubtedly, even the congregate housing bears the dream of “living poetically” of habitants; housing is closely related to its implied life-style, and habitants who live in living spaces with different characters have a huge difference in the feeling of life. The designer shall be responsible for offering the residents a fine living space and even leading a healthier, greener, and more energetic lifestyle even if there are adverse conditions; as for the community commerce, if it is the passive party, its development may influence both the condition of consumption of community residents and the overall structural layout of urban commerce and even the comprehensive business ability of the city.
Vanke·Cen Avenue Project is located in the intersection of Tongyun Road and Tongyi Road in the north of Hangzhou, and this location is the gateway to go to the north of Hangzhou from the main urban area. Total residential construction area of “Beichen Zhiguang” is nearly 300,000 m2, and the “Cen Avenue” is the international commercial street with the construction scale of 8,000 m2. Persisting in the concept of letting the business back to life, the architects of Vanke and Tianhua try to satisfy the basic shopping needs of residents, and what’s more important, they also try to offer services for meeting the lives of residents; the adverse condition of being short of native landscape in the area makes Tianhua develop a new style, community commerce expected to actively drive the inertia of community residents’ daily habits, and even attract the residents in cities around to gather here and promote the urban community vitality.
“Rolling Stone Block”: Stimulate the Life Potential of the Community

From the residential communities in the past to the blocks and communities now, people's demand is no longer just limited to building and living; they have put forward higher requirements on lifestyle and real estate premium. In the north of Hangzhou, where there are no enough supporting facilities, the team of Tianhua proposes the concept of “building life first and then the houses” after analyzing the composition of the community groups in details, and specially creates a leisure business platform with vitality that is fit for young people in this specific block to communicate with each other. This block creates a new and small business circle, which advocates the new lifestyle and guides the lifestyle current in urban youth settlements, through taking the modern and fashionable overall design of the Cen Avenue with rich layers as the landmark.

The commercial inner street of Vanke·Cen Avenue is not an independent block. Strictly speaking, it is formed by the stores in towers and lower floors of residential buildings, but the enough depth difference between the lower floors of residential buildings and towers weakens the sense of repression of road space. In consideration of the positioning of “Beichen Zhiguang” – the young white-collar group, the architects put forward the concept of “Rolling Stone Block”, which tallies with the main consumption crowd – young people and the ratio of commercial activities in the future. The construction volume is like the “stone” that can be split and dislocated; the transparent and light material is like “water” that can broaden horizons and decorate the façade.

As for the design of construction volume, the streamline at the entrance is used to cut and reduce the volume, so as to form the cohesive space line of force for gathering popularity for the street; the overhead bridges can construct an enclosed entrance Plaza, which can be the climax of the commercial street; the flexible landscape design is matched up with buildings’ characteristics of a youth community. On the processing of “water” - construction materials, punched plates and other new materials are boldly adopted to be the cover of buildings; the distinctive beveled mould and the new materials complement each other, and special volume is used to emphasize the node of the main entrance, which centralize the vitality and focus of the community in the commercial inner street; the street is also attached with LED lights with different colors; the lighting is designed according to needs to blend in the factor of “rock”.
Commercial Inner Street: Promote the Community Property Premium
The design, which relies on the life and business atmosphere created in this area, aims to realize the capital operation mode of “throw out a minnow to catch a whale” of different investors with the advantages of small area, low total price, and stores’ facing the street; it also provides the huge space for the diversified development of commercial activities, promotes the community property premium, and make the designed biggest value for owners.
In addition, the clear theme depends on the balance of the structure of commercial activities, and the successful ratio of commercial activities is another key factor in positioning. On the basis of the commercial street of Cen Avenue, Beichen Zhiguang integrates and innovates a set of new solutions for community life, including the five major life systems (catering system, retail system, life supporting, Gongwanghui Club, and early education), three special services (happiness post, neighborhood card, and community commercial APP), and the practice of community convention of Cen Avenue; it creates a system of its own, is flexibly designed and fits the users... which gain more business value for Cen Avenue, and will offer more comfortable and convenient life for owners with the all-around service.
At the opening of Vanke·Cen Avenue Project, over a thousand houses were sold, making it the star buildings in Eastern China. The initiative of the entire block has been fully displayed in the architectural design of eye-catching and the vitality of attracting investment.
Residential Tower: Recessively Show the City Relationships

The concern on the block and the city of Cen Avenue Project has even been extended to the design of residential towers. Residential towers do not adopt the form of closed blocks or only consider the design of the project, but look upon an area, even the future development of a city in the point of view of urban architecture. A residential tower has a pure volume, and its façade can faithfully reflect the plane functions and all details are in place; the depth difference emphasizes the independence of the lower layers, simple towers become the background of the community, highlighting the easiness and vitality of the “Rolling Stone Block”, and setting off the commercial block with strong life atmosphere; while meeting the living demand, the block has skillfully matched its commercial, recreational and other functions.
The systematic design of community commerce is essentially the win-win result of investors, developers, managers and consumers, and the precondition of the win-win result is that there shall be a successful design pattern. The commercial size of domestic residential communities is becoming larger and larger, and the operating difficulty is also increasing. With its professional team, Tianhua has made the synchronous consideration the interests of value of investors and managers and the need of convenient operation after balancing the positioning of developers and consumers; it has successfully created a commercial block model with a specific theme, realized the livable and the high-quality life, built the public places for social intercourse, and at the same time stimulated the chain stores and the development of brands to create more value for all parties.
ROCK Block - Derive From the Dialogue between Stones and Water
The stone-like construction volume can be split and dislocated, and the water-like glass materials are transparent and light, which looks like the continuous flow winding among the stones, and becomes the “backbone” of the entire commercial street, making it a smooth whole.
●The plaza in front of the commercial street as the image of the street contributes to inwards flow to the commercial street by scattering, beveling and other approaches of building.
● The overbridge leads to the entrance plaza of the closed community as the climax of the commercial street.
● In combination with waterside plaza, crceate a open waterside space like comfortable “living room” of every owner.
●the innovation of Vanke ●Cen Avenue also depends on the utilization of new materials-punched plates; the punched-plates are used on the appearance of the club; the combination of included unique style and the new materials are perfect for both. at daytime the punched plates look clear and neat; at night the casting light covers the exquisite shape and elegant artistic concept. The bold innovation of punched-plates bring a surprising effect of the project.

A story about innovation
Create a magnet effect of finance
Ronghui Plaza, Finance Street, Tianjin
High-grade residences in the business center
Share classic quiet easy life in the towndown
A busy city life behind the Finance Street
Project: Ronghui Plaza, Finance Street, Tianjin
City: Tianjin
Client: Finance Street
Type: the urban complex
Building area: 295000 m2

Ronghui Plaza is located in the intersection of Nankai Changjiang Road and Nankai Sanma Road in the core area of Tianjin, it belongs to the key section of Nanjing Road, and it is the urban complex project of combining financial offices, business support, and high-end residence. Offices are specially built for high-end financial customers and international famous enterprises; the project aims to create financial offices of all-sales model through whole sale, retail, and rent; the commercial auxiliary products of 44,400 m2 can offer customers the 360 – degree assets chain service platform 4C intensive operation (Business service center, asset management center, life service center, and property service center) through the 2,000 m2 of the four-season parlor and flower street; the single-family garden offices of 15,000 m2 has adopted the innovative design and created the light spot of diversity; the residential houses of 86,000 m2 rely on the regional effect of financial clusters, and form the quality of high-end products that stores are in front and residential houses behind, and seek quiet in a noisy neighborhood. The overall image of the project is the spatial relationship of a triangle formed by three ultra-high buildings, which has built the city landmark group of 200 meters high; it is the large commercial complex that is rare in the core area of Tianjin.
The rapid urbanization process in China has urged most of the cities to prepare and implement the large-scale new town development and construction plans in the past decade. The large amount of infrastructure investment in the newly urbanized areas offers the fine external environment for the implementation of the super high-rise project; at the same time, the rapid growth of city economic strength, the investors’ demand for high-end offices, commercial places, and apartments also establish the demand basis for super high-rise buildings.
As for the super high-rise project, Tianhua not only pursues the height of super high-rise buildings, but also increases the asset value of them practically guided by the market demand in aspects of positioning, planning and management, and make the project the landmark building with high quality, high return, and the nature of sustainable development. In designing the 200-meter tall high-rise office building - Tianjin Ronghui Center - for the first time, Tianhua has not made a big fuss with the stunt of “the landmark high-rise office building”; in addition to offer fine services for customers, Tianhua has considered the important premium factors such as location, quality and property management, promoted the overall image of financial offices through the integrated design, and planned to keep and even increase the value of the project, and finally realize the “magnet effect” of the super high-rise building.
Ronghui Center is located in the intersection of Nankai Changjiang Road and Nankai Sanma Road in Nankai District of Tianjin, and it belongs to the core section of Nanjing Road. The public buildings cover a total floor area over ground of 209,000 m2, and the underground construction area of 85,298 m2; the stores in lower floors of residential buildings cover the construction area of 86,000 m2 and the underground construction area of 60,891 m2.
Ronghui Plaza is the urban complex project of combining financial offices, business support, and high-end residence. As the whole-sale product, the cluster design plane of Ronghui Center is standard, and the overall planning of the project has formed the quality that “stores are in front and residential houses behind”, and “seek quiet in a noisy neighborhood”, which both echoes the situation of forks around and increase the output-input ratio, and improve the efficiency in using the financial offices; the shrinkage proportion of super high-rise buildings’ structure and interface materials has been carefully considered and weighed; the project has been specially built for customers, the details such as the requirements of storey and area, the administration building, and supporting commercial points have been finely designed, and the design has been perfected in the interaction with customers.
Finance Stage-A clustering finance zone in business center
Walking from east to west from the Haguangsi Temple subway station, the 300 meters of urban extension surface of Ronghui Plaza heaves in sight layer by layer: one can first see the cluster formed by three high towers, Tower A of 200 meters high is the visual center, and Tower B and C set off Tower A with the similar form, which increases the landmark image of the whole area; the modern classic facade design pays much attention to details and the match of materials and colors, so they are elegant, solemn and grand; walking close to the building cluster, and into the broad Plaza in the north, one will see the continuous business interface; the parlor plays the role of making the finishing point, for it is the highlight of the interface. From the point of view of the city, the project faces the south, and is the visual focus at the end of Nankai Sanma Road; from the point of view of space image, the 12 meters high of “four-season parlor” will gather and bypass all kinds of people to the official, commercial, residential, and other areas, so it is the veritable city parlor; as a new financial “stage”, Ronghui Plaza will inevitably become a distinctive landmark in Nankai District after construction, and the broad display façade will meet the challenges of the future with the attitude of taking in all things.
The form of the building groups takes bamboo shoots after a spring rain as a metaphor, which symbolizes the growth trend of financial offices; with the building crown form, the simple shrinkage of buildings and the metrical arrangement of vertical stone lines, the facade image Ronghui Plaza pays more attention to the expression of wholeness than the surrounding buildings; from east to west, the display surface is formed by the curtain wall according to the modular design of .5 meters.
In addition, through the image embellishment in the four-season parlor and the main entrances, the spatial level of the facade is enriched, which makes people feel the spatial alternation along the street while feeling the temperament of the financial flagship of Ronghui Plaza, and the comfortable experience feeling in the Plaza along the street can also be improved; longitudinally, the towering tower buildings can bring the sight to the top from the carefully designed curtain wall made through the combination of stones and metals; the shrinkage on the top increases the sense of height, and at the same time represents the modern classical proportional relationship, and offers Ronghui Plaza the temperament of steady, elegance and grandness.

Finance Offices——One-stop Business & Shopping Center

Ronghui Plaza will be a “one-stop” commercial and living centre possessing both function and form, and organizes the customized finance mating business, office building and high-end residential district, as well as promoting products in numerous sizes together after completion. Three high-rise office buildings attract office people into the complex building, the security and other service commercial activities in the podium business will actively create financial atmosphere for them, in addition, some high-end business in city gallery level also provides display platform. In the meantime, the high-end residential district in the south of the complex building creates a comfortable city garden for these urban elite. The total planning combines activity and inertia and brings out the best in each other.
For the functional organization, the design provides the owners with a complete experience integrating a variety of services, such as commercial services, assets management, life service and property service through boutique mall positioned as commercial facilities; For the form, the four-season parlor, flower street and commerce internal space provide all owners with pleasant communal space, making up the lack of resource and quality in the condition of high rate of volume.
Financial Office District- Dominated by High Efficiency
Efficient office space is the design dominance for the three office buildings in Ronghui Plaza, and the unique “4C (commercial services center, asset management center, life service center and property service center) intensive operations” are the ways of resolution, which comprehensively provide clients with assets chain service platform.
With the centrally-mounted core tube, it creates an interface with 360°continuous landscape, especially provides nice office space for the whole sale space in Tower B and Tower C; for the office space, 1.5m is the modulus unit, 9m is the standard pitch of columns, and through the study on different office space, the space depth is finally controlled within 11-13m, which suits different enterprise office needs, especially provides many division possibilities for the retail of Tower A. In the meantime, the built-in facility maintenance solution stresses the completeness and privacy of the office space and provides much impeccable office space in whole-sale type. The selective assembly of the core tube is also carefully designed, taking into account of the needs for the high and low districts of each tower building and arranging the first floor lobby respectively without interference.
Construction of the Interior Interface - Sequence Type Spatial Experience with Fine Design
If the commerce district over 40,000 m2 adopts general setting, it will be very difficult to be accommodated in the land parcel for its limited space areas along the street. So the architect brings the comprehensive service concept of parlor into Tianjin and creates the form of “Four-Seasons Parlor and Flower Street”. Under the steady external wall of the office space, the office space innovatively set up with inner garden is hidden and constructs a series of urban space joints through reasonable connection.
The starting point of the space is the parlor, which is in staggered arrangement with the transmeridional commercial inner street “Flower Street” and acts as the continuation of the “Flower Street”. The overhead bridge in the second floor makes the two districts in east and west in much closer connection, and in the meantime, the underground commerce street extends the “Flower Street” to the high-rise apartment in the south, which provides convenience to the resident and emphasizes people’s feeling in community; Ronghui Plaza brings the Shizheng Road in the east into the commercial plaza, the carefully crafted landscape avenue leads the residents to low and intensive residential district in the south and through the north side entrance garden to a land of serenity, which keeps away from the noisy of the city. The whole urban complex builds a spatial experience atmosphere in which human is the feeling subject and is respected and cared through combination the point, line and area and the reasonable organization of function and route, as well as the fine constructing interface.
Though landmark high-rise office building has higher influence, it’s not the necessary factor of premium. Ronghui Plaza has not yet been completed, but because that it’s equipped with the comprehensive function of top-level commerce and top-level apartment, and other superior commercial convenience brought by traffic facilities, it has attracted many enterprises needing to maintain and promote the brand image to enter and produces a continuous “magnet effect” to its surrounding environment, which makes it the genuine landmark large commercial complex. In the meantime, the new French style residential area constructed following closely also become the champion sales of Tianjin in the same year, which proves the great influence of “magnet effect” in a side point.

Chongqing Longhu
Lijia Club
Client: Longhu Real Estate
City: Chongqing
Type: Commerce
Building area: 1347.1 m2
As the sales office of Longhu in the large-scale Lijia residential community, Lijia Club is located on the hilltop in Chongqing Lijia District and overlooks the Jialing River. Taking possession of unique landscape resources, the base makes full use of the river view at the beginning of the design as a guide, applies modern techniques to give explanations to the space and stresses the psychological experience of entering into the club at the same time.
The architecture has two layers: the basement uses dark-colored stone, while the ground floor adopts light-colored stone and glass screen. With the sharp contrast between the two layers and the design of floor-lamps, the main body of the architecture gives people a feeling of floating on the hilltop.
The total graphic design takes into a full consideration the following factors including the construction and terrain as well as the visual effects obscured by the architecture and the protection of the existing vegetation that forms the existing layout. As far as the graphic design is concerned, the architecture makes use of the most basic design method of the two-layer well-hole in the vestibule and naturally integrates the views of mountain and river by building the negotiation district to be 8.4 meters with the added design of the curtain-wall towards the landscape. The Lijia Club will be built to be an artwork on the hilltop through the elaborate design and the exquisite construction.
The façade design emphasizes the simplicity of the architecture blocks and advocates the combination of stone and glass-walls with an aim to create an elegant and peaceful atmosphere by using concise design language. The stone entity of the enclosed veranda is well interpreted by a round of glass ribs, which brings the architecture a wealth of a layering feeling and a sense of light and shadow. Glass ribs under the irradiation of night lights endow the stone walls with more possibilities and also make the whole architecture more charming and attractive.

The construction area is added up to 586,312 m2(excluded the 468-meter-high tower) and its functions mainly include the development of first-class office buildings, conference facilities, high-end commercial space, style commercial streets, grand hotels, creative parks and residential area.
The concept of the project is known as “collision and derivation” .The artistic conception of the 468-meter-high tower is taken from the morphology of the snow-capped mountains. The overall land mass is planned in consideration of this metaphor meaning and becomes an idea of extending icebergs and a concept of continuity. The residential area consists of 12 super high-rise tower buildings and community commercial podiums. The tower buildings are planned in the form of a curvilinear plane layout and are surrounded by a green courtyard in the middle, which creates a private dwelling space for residents. Variations of landscape, recreation space and clubhouse facilities are generated by the changes in topography. The façade design of the residential tower buildings adopts the form abundant in formal senses by combining phantom and reality. In the daytime the balcony with changeable angles breaks the monotonous appearance and presents the crystal physique while the glass modeling on the top of the architecture strengthens the formal senses of crystal at night. The commercial façade makes use of glass, stone, perforated aluminum and other materials, and all the materials are in junction of exaggerated folding geometric shapes, which echoes the theme of iceberg and also gives people a strong visual impact. The artistic conception of glacier and flowing water is extended to the central courtyard in the residential area and also reflected in the landscape design. Landscape platforms are retreated layer upon layer in accordance with the topography and in this way the terrain transformation is reduced to a minimum. The project tries its best to minimize the earthwork excavation volume of the underground garage, and greatly reduce the construction costs and equip the garage with natural ventilation and lighting.

City: Shanghai
Type: Culture and education
Building area: 7700 m2
Target—Rebuild Public Space
Here were the plants of the 3rd Factory of Shanghai Steel & Iron Group; in 2010, here was the complex of epitomes of some cities at World Expo; in 2012, there was the broken appearance and empty frameworks; in the future here will become Shanghai Design Center.
