但这件事在国内朋友圈、微博上引起的战火，却还在燃烧着。

The fire surrounding Notre Dame is being extinguished, thanks to joint firefighting efforts. Yet at the same time, another quarrel is burning across Chinese social networks.

早在大火消息传来、各媒体都在实时更新最新进展之时，微博上就悄然出现了一种声音：巴黎圣母院离我们万里之遥，你们怎么就有空关心呢？

On Tuesday morning, hours after the fire surrounding Notre Dame started, a comment emerged on micro blog, China’s equivalent to Twitter, wondering why people “mourn for the loss of a foreign cathedral”.

随着舆情继续发酵，这件事终于被同历史扯上了关系。玩微博的都知道，一牵涉历史，就扯不清楚了。

被牵涉的这段历史是：圆明园。1860年，第二次鸦片战争期间，英法侵略军洗劫中国皇家园林圆明园后，加以焚毁。

Another few hours later, that opinion grew more widespread, with some of those who shared it comparing the incident to the pillaging and burning of Yuanmingyuan, or the Old Summer Palace, an evil act committed by the Anglo-French troops during their invasion of China in 1860.

这件事不仅记载在中国的历史课本里，在法国的历史资料里同样白纸黑字，无可辩驳。

这些人的逻辑是这样的：

“法国人烧圆明园时，也没人痛心啊！今天巴黎圣母院烧了，正好！”

"Why mourn for the loss of the French? They burnt the Old Summer Palace!"

“这是报应，是对法国人烧圆明园罪行的报应。”

"It is a curse on the French, and they should pay for their past evil deeds."

这事在微博上越闹越大，越吵越凶。今天中午，甚至有的微信公众号都出了这样的标题：你是心疼派还是喝彩派？

英法联军火烧圆明园这段历史，是民族的耻辱，绝对值得永远铭记。

不过，记住这一点还不够。

我们还应看到，英法联军焚毁圆明园这一行为，在英法两国并不乏批评者。

最出名的，大文豪雨果还写过《致巴特勒上尉的信》，把英法比作两个强盗，这封信也进入了中国的语文读本。

2003年，法国历史学家伯纳·布立赛还出版过《1860：圆明园大劫难》，专门介绍了这件事。这是严重的罪行，中英法三国都会有人记得。

而雨果为圆明园谴责英法侵略军的词句，值得我们今天再读一遍。

“这座大得犹如一座城市的建筑物是世世代代的结晶，为谁而建？为了各国人民。因为，岁月创造的一切都是属于人类的。”

“This edifice, as enormous as a city, had been built by the centuries, for whom? For the peoples. For the work of time belongs to man.”

是的，古建筑作为人类艺术的瑰宝，是属于全人类的。同样的，古建筑一旦被毁，无论悲剧发生在哪，都是全人类的损失。

所以，去年九月，巴西国家博物馆发生大火，全世界都表示了痛心。2001年，塔利班毁掉巴米扬大佛，遭到了全世界的谴责。

无论是出于故意还是意外，被毁掉的美好都回不来了。

That’s why, when the National Museum of Brazil caught ablaze in September 2018, the whole world mourned. That’s also why, when the Taliban forces destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhist sculptures in 2001, they were blamed by the whole world. Time can elapse, but lost cultural relics won’t come back.

这篇文章绝没有给侵略者开脱的意思。

洗劫、焚烧圆明园是严重的罪行，犯罪者虽没有受到司法审判，却被记载在历史上，世世代代遭受谴责。英法侵略军，永远是一个耻辱的代号。

Of course, pillaging and burning the Old Summer Palace was an evil deed and serious crime committed by the French troops, and those involved in that offense have not received their deserved penalty. Their names will be permanently carved in the history of shame.

而中国也一直在努力追寻那些流散海外的文物。据说总数有一千七百万件，那中国就追索到最后一件回国为止，一件都不能少。

China will relentlessly seek to recover those antiques lost during the pillage, until the last of them comes home.

不过，还请大家放过巴黎圣母院吧，那也是全人类的遗产，这是法国的损失，也是全世界的损失。

But that’s no reason to hate Notre Dame, only because it is located in the capital of France. It was not Notre Dame invading China at that time. History should not be forgotten, yet hate should not fall on the cultural relics of humankind.

纵观历史与现在，世界上发生的文化灾难数不胜数，圆明园算一个，今天的巴黎圣母院也算一个。

今日之大火，让人类文明古迹又消逝一处，怎不让人扼腕叹息。而今后，还会看到多少大大小小的文化破坏？我们不敢想象。
