Abstract This paper focuses its study on the translation strategies to be applied to children’s literature (‘CL’ for short in the following context). The author shows her particular interest in translating figures of speech because CL is of a very unique style and contains many figures of speech. Based on the analysis of translating simile, pun and assonance, this research aims to come up with some strategies in translating CL. It first provides a review of both CL, and the existing CL translation principles, among which the principle of “children-orientation” is introduced briefly. Second, it covers concepts of several kinds of figures of speech, especially simile, pun and assonance, as well as the strategies of translating them. Then eleven selected examples from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and their different versions of Chinese translation for each are quoted for comparison, with the focus on the translation of simile, pun and assonance. To do that, the author compares another translation version with Professor Zhao Yuanren’s in each case. Meanwhile, the different strategies adopted by different translators are analyzed and commented. The final conclusion offers some suggestions on the use of appropriate strategies in accordance with “children-orientation” principle in translating CL works. In order to provide excellent translation of CL, translators should be able to appreciate the original works and then convert the same into the target language that is familiar to the addressed children. This research proves that, only by taking into account the features of CL will the translator be able to come up with effective strategies to help produce a quality translation. Abstract Since the exchanges between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and western medicine are becoming more and more frequent, it is urgent to have a large number of qualified translators to undertake the translation work concerning TCM. However, among the current Chinese-English TCM translations, good ones are rare due to the unawareness of the discourse differences between the original TCM texts and their English renditions and to the subsequent lack of strategies to cope with them. As a result, the current TCM translation work is mainly restricted at the lexical and semantic levels, which in fact increases the foreignness of the target text (TT) and hinders accurate understanding of the intended readers. This research, based on a linguistic comparison between some Chinese and English TCM texts, aims to search for some strategies which can help translators convert Chinese TCM texts into English more faithfully and smoothly with a focus on the methods of textual analysis and the relevant translation strategies. This paper begins with a review of TCM translation history and existing translating principles and strategies. It then introduces some relevant linguistic concepts that are considered necessary to render good translations applicable in the conversion of TCM texts. After this, three texts selected from TCM textbooks and their English translations are quoted for comparison of the discourse differences on translating terminology, keeping textual cohesion and converting passive voice. Meanwhile, the strategies adopted in dealing with these three aspects are also analyzed and commented on. Finally, the paper concludes with a summary of the discourse differences between Chinese and English TCM texts, and suggestions for using appropriate strategies are given. The research shows that only by taking into account the discourse differences between
