非限制性定语从句 (一)前置法:一些较短而具有描写性的英语非限制性的定语 从句,也可译成带“的”的前置定语,放在被修饰词前面。 1. The sun, which had hidden all day, now came out in all its splendor. 2. He liked his sister, who was warm and pleasant, but he did not like his brother, who was aloof and arrogant. 3. But Miggle’s laugh, which was very infectious, broke the silence. (二)后置法 1. 译成并列分句 (1) 在译文中把原文从句后置,重复英语关系词所代表的含义。 1. Kissinger and his small group of aides toured the Forbidden City, where the Chinese emperors had once lived in lofty splendor.  
(2) 在译文中把原文从句后置,省略英语 关系词所代表的含义。 1. After dinner, the four key negotiators resumed their talks, which continued well into the night. 2. He saw in front that haggard whitehaired old man, whose eyes flashed red with fury. 3. His wife, Betty, is a Shanghai-born Chinese who left China at the age of eight, and whose book, “August”, tells of her sister Sansan’s life in China.

三. 兼有状语从句职能的定语从句 (一)译成表“因”的分句 1) The ambassador was giving a dinner for a few people whom he wished especially to talk to or to hear from. 2) We know that a cat, whose eyes can take in many more rays of light than our eyes, can see clearly in the night. (二)译成表“果”的分句 1) There was something original, independent, and heroic about the plan that pleased all of them. (三)译成表“让步”的分句 1) He insisted on building another house, which he had no use for. 2) My assistant, who had carefully read through the instructions before doing his experiment, could not obtain satisfactory results, because he followed them mechanically.  
(四)译成表“目的”的分句 1) So my chances of getting to America are pretty slim, although I have not given up my efforts to get a visa, that will enable me to visit that developed country. 2) The capitalist states maintain enormous armies and gigantic navies which are used for getting great profits from all over the world. (五)译成表“条件”、“假设”的分句 1) College graduates become desperate for work, any work, which will help them to keep their life. 2) He would be a short-sighted commander who merely manned his fortress and did not look beyond.  
状语从句的译法: 状语从句包括时间、原因、条件、让步、目的等各种 从句。 一. 表时间的状语从句 (一)译成相应的表示时间的状语 (1) While she spoke, the tears were running down. (2) Please turn off the light when you leave the room. (3) When the history of Nixon Administration is finally written, the chances are that his Chinese policy will stand out as a model of common sense and good diplomacy. (二) 译成“刚(一)…就…”的句式 (1) He had hardly rushed into the room when he shouted, “Fire! Fire!”  
(2) Hardly had we arrived when it began to rain. (3) When I reached the beach, I collapsed. (4) He had scarcely handed me the letter when he asked me to read it. (5) Hardly had I got aboard when the train started. (三) 译成并列的分句 (1) He shouted as he ran. (2) They sent him free when his ransom had not yet been paid. (3) I was about to speak, when Mr. Smith cut in.  
(4) John rose gloomily as the train stopped, for he was thinking of his ailing mother. (5) When at last he stood upon the bluff, he turned to his little sister and looked upon her sorrowfully. (6) Mrs. Acland gazed at him, her eyes darkening with a curious expression of dislike and distrust as he silently turned away. 二. 表示原因的状语从句 (一)译成表“因” 的分句 1) The crops failed because the season was dry.  
(2) Because we are both prepared to proceed on the basis of equality and mutual respect, we meet at a moment when we can make peaceful cooperation a reality. (3) The policies open to developing countries are more limited than for industrialized nations because the poorer economies respond less to changing conditions and administrative control.  
4) Because the departure was not easy, we made it as brief as possible. ? Because he was convinced of the accuracy of this fact, he stuck to his opinion. ?
